If you can't find one, simply ask your prospective magician about the possibility of catching one of his or her shows in person. I've had potential clients swing by one of my public shows on occasion. If they don't have the time, or if my upcoming shows are all private, I always offer to demonstrate how I'll entertain their guests, by either visiting their home or meeting up at a local coffee shop.
Another tip is to check out online review sites. Sites such as Facebook and Google are loaded with customer reviews for all types of businesses, helping the potential customers of those businesses to decide whether or not they're worth doing business with.

Once you've found your prospective magician's website, you need to give it the twice-over. Ensure that its images are of high quality, that it doesn't contain any misspellings, and that its design is attractive and up-to-date in general.
If a magician has gone to the trouble of creating a high-quality website, he or she has demonstrated a dedication to his or her craft. This is a level of dedication and professionalism that you can trust.
Ask About Insurance
While it's a fairly rare occurrence, from time to time, magic shows result in damage to either human beings or property. For occasions such as these, magicians need to have liability insurance policies on their side.
Insurance is important not only for the magician, but for the person who hires the magician. Should you hire an uninsured magician who goes on to cause damage to your event guests or grounds, you could be held responsible for the damages.
In essence, before you sign any contracts, make sure to explicitly ask about insurance. Any reputable magician will show you a copy of his or her policy.
